New Hampshire's coast is short — about 29 km from Seabrook to Portsmouth — and the region behind it holds the state's oldest towns. Portsmouth is the only base with a walkable downtown, hotels and evening restaurants; Dover and Exeter are half-day stops on the Amtrak line; Hampton and Seabrook are the sand-and-boardwalk strip. A car opens Odiorne Point and Route 1A; without one you can still do Portsmouth, Durham, Dover and Exeter by train and bus.

- Wildcat Transit runs a reduced schedule when UNH is out of session and no weekend service, so do not rely on it in July or August.
- Hampton Beach and the boardwalk strip are seasonal; many businesses close outside June–September.
- Snowfalls over about 15 cm are the ones that disrupt driving; snow removal is otherwise fast.
