Schaumburg is a suburban retail and hotel cluster 40–50 minutes northwest of downtown Chicago, built around Woodfield Mall, the largest in Illinois. It is not a sightseeing city: the reasons to stay are cheap beds near O'Hare, free parking, and easy Metra or Pace access into the city. Give it one night, or two if you are shopping and doing Legoland with kids.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: roads wind and do not follow a grid, so a map or phone navigation is essential. Pace runs about 16 bus routes, including express services to the Rosemont transit center for the CTA Blue Line to O'Hare and downtown, plus a summer trolley linking the malls and convention center. Metra's Milwaukee District West line stops at Schaumburg (2000 S Springinsguth Rd) and reaches Union Station in about an hour.

Safety

A low-crime, well-lit suburb; the real risks are winter driving on I-90, deer and ice, and leaving bags visible in mall parking lots.
  • Suburban roads curve and dead-end; you can see your destination and still not find a road to it.
  • Metra station parking is cheap by day but does not allow overnight parking.
  • Summer afternoons are humid; winter brings snow and ice on the expressways.
