Saxony-Anhalt has the densest run of UNESCO sites of any German state, but they sit 40–120 km apart with no single hub. Halle is the rail hub and the fastest arrival; Magdeburg is the river-and-cathedral base; the Harz towns (Wernigerode, Quedlinburg, Thale) are the scenic base. Two bases in 4–5 nights beats one base and long day-trips.

- Saxony-Anhalt is not a one-base state: Halle to Wernigerode is roughly 2 h by train with a change, so a 'day-trip everything from Halle' plan burns hours.
