Major city · Côte d'Ivoire

San-Pédro

Skip unless you have a specific reason (port, beach, Taï National Park access). One night is enough; the beach is average and the town is a transport hub, not a destination.

San-Pédro is Côte d'Ivoire's second-largest port city (pop. 260,000) and the gateway to Taï National Park. The town itself has a working port, a few beaches and a lively central market, but the coastline is less scenic than Sassandra or Assinie. Most travellers pass through on the way to the park or use it as a stopover between Abidjan and the southwest. One night covers the essentials; two only if you are heading into Taï.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • West Africa ↗Carry an original yellow fever vaccination certificate on any West African trip: several countries on the coast road demand it of every arrival, and the rest demand it after you have passed through a neighbour.
  • West Africa ↗Cross land borders and drive between cities in daylight only; plan each crossing as a full travel day with cash for fees and passport copies for checkpoints.
  • Côte d'Ivoire ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport on official Ivorian government sources before booking.
  • Côte d'Ivoire ↗Governments advise against travel to parts of the far north near the Mali and Burkina Faso borders; check your own government's advice.

Getting around

Shared taxis (200 CFA per person, locals' rate; foreigners may be quoted 1000 CFA). Walking is fine in the centre. For Taï National Park, arrange a taxi or join a tour from Abidjan.

Safety

Generally safe, but petty theft occurs in markets and on shared taxis. Keep valuables out of sight. The coastal road can be dangerous after dark due to poor condition and lack of lighting.
  • Coastal road from Abidjan via Sassandra is in poor condition and may close in the rainy season; use the Gagnoa–Soubré route instead (about 8 h).
  • Shared taxi drivers may overcharge foreigners: insist on 200 CFA for rides within town.
  • Beach is nothing special; don't expect swimming-quality sand or water.
