Voykit pocket guide · Côte d'Ivoire
San-Pédro
Skip unless you have a specific reason (port, beach, Taï National Park access). One night is enough; the beach is average and the town is a transport hub, not a destination.
San-Pédro is Côte d'Ivoire's second-largest port city (pop. 260,000) and the gateway to Taï National Park. The town itself has a working port, a few beaches and a lively central market, but the coastline is less scenic than Sassandra or Assinie. Most travellers pass through on the way to the park or use it as a stopover between Abidjan and the southwest. One night covers the essentials; two only if you are heading into Taï.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: 'Bonjour' and ask after family; avoid: Skipping greetings
- Hands: Right hand for everything; avoid: Left-hand money
- Elders: Greet first; let them start eating; avoid: Interrupting
- Masks and sacred sites: Follow the guide; avoid: Photos without permission
Scams and watch-outs
- Coastal road from Abidjan via Sassandra is in poor condition and may close in the rainy season; use the Gagnoa–Soubré route instead (about 8 h).
- Shared taxi drivers may overcharge foreigners: insist on 200 CFA for rides within town.
- Beach is nothing special; don't expect swimming-quality sand or water.
Generally safe, but petty theft occurs in markets and on shared taxis. Keep valuables out of sight. The coastal road can be dangerous after dark due to poor condition and lack of lighting.
