About these names
Almost everything a first visit needs sits along a 6-mile coastal strip: the walled old town at the west end, Puerta de Tierra (the narrow neck with the Capitol and Escambrón beach), Condado and Ocean Park in the middle, and Isla Verde and the airport at the east. Santurce sits inland behind Condado. Old San Juan is walkable; everything else is a short ride.

- Old San Juan (Viejo San Juan): Blue cobbles, plazas and both forts. Hot at noon and busy on cruise days; car access is limited, so choose a hotel with a drop-off. Suits: First visit, forts, colonial streets, dinner on foot. Price band $$$.
- Puerta de Tierra (Puerta de Tierra): A narrow strip between the old town and Condado with the Capitol building and the Escambrón beach. Few places to sleep; it is a pass-through. Suits: Sheltered swimming, the Capitol, a walk between areas.
- Condado (Condado): Hotel row, restaurants along Ashford Avenue and a wide beach. Flat and easy on wheels; hot and shadeless at midday. Suits: Beach time, families, short airport transfers. Price band $$$.
- Ocean Park and Isla Verde (Ocean Park, Isla Verde): Residential Ocean Park has guesthouses and a windy beach. Isla Verde has big hotels and is 10 minutes from the airport. Both need a car for the old town. Suits: Beach stays near the airport, guesthouses, a local-feeling beach.
