San Juan by district
Almost everything a first visit needs sits along a 6-mile coastal strip: the walled old town at the west end, Puerta de Tierra (the narrow neck with the Capitol and Escambrón beach), Condado and Ocean Park in the middle, and Isla Verde and the airport at the east. Santurce sits inland behind Condado. Old San Juan is walkable; everything else is a short ride.
About these names
The old town is a small islet-like peninsula; Puerta de Tierra links it to the mainland. Hotels in Old San Juan are in older buildings; Condado and Isla Verde have larger hotels with lifts and pools. Ride-hailing and taxis fill the gaps; there is no metro to the old town.
