Best day trips from San Francisco: how to get there and what to see

Distances below are road kilometres from San Francisco town; times assume a car and normal traffic and are estimates to confirm locally. Costs are 2026 estimates for one person unless noted.

Santa Catalina is the obvious first pick: a surf village up the coast with dive shops, simple restaurants and boats out to Coiba National Park. Coiba is the reason to go — a former prison island turned marine park with reef fish, turtles and, in season, whales. Day boats generally leave in the morning and return late afternoon; confirm departure times, park access and booking lead time with a Santa Catalina operator (check).

Soná is the nearest town with banks, supermarkets and a market, useful for a half day and for stocking up. Further into Azuero you reach villages with colonial churches and craft workshops; this is a slow drive on rural roads, so pick one or two stops rather than trying to loop the whole peninsula.

Boquete is the highland counterpoint: coffee farms, cloud forest and views of Volcán Barú. It is roughly 3.5–4.5 hours each way from San Francisco (check), which makes it a punishing day trip. Treat it as an overnight unless you only want one coffee tour and a meal.

Playa Morrillo and the north coast beaches are close and quiet, good for a half day of surf and seafood. Santiago, the provincial capital, is a practical stop for markets, a hospital and onward buses.

Transport dominates. A rental car with insurance runs roughly USD 40–70 per day in 2026, plus fuel; a hired driver for a full day is commonly USD 80–150 depending on distance and negotiation (check). Shared shuttles to Santa Catalina or Boquete cost less per seat but run on fixed schedules.

Food is cheap outside resorts: a set lunch (almuerzo) is around USD 4–8, a seafood plate USD 8–15 (check). Coiba tours bundle boat, guide, lunch and park entry, which is why they look expensive next to a beach day. Carry cash; card readers are unreliable in small towns.

Start early. Coastal roads are fine in daylight but have potholes, unlit stretches and wandering livestock after dark, and you do not want to be driving back from Boquete at night.

Fill the tank in Santiago or Soná. Rural stations can be out of fuel, and cards are not always accepted. Keep small bills for park fees, parking and roadside stops.

In the wet months (roughly May–November) afternoon downpours are normal; plan the long drive for the morning and keep a buffer. January–April is the usual dry window on the Pacific side (check).
