Prices move with season and with how far you are from the centre. The dry season from January to April is the busiest stretch, and the same room can cost noticeably more then.

The centre is compact. A handful of small hotels and guesthouses cluster around the main street, with the bus stop and the market area within a short walk. This is the choice for a first visit or for anyone without a car: you can arrive by bus, drop your bag and sort out food and onward transport on foot.

Along the highway edge you find simpler places aimed at drivers, with parking and easy access for an early departure. They are less pleasant to walk from in the evening, and the road is busy, so they suit a single night rather than a stay.

Outside town, rooms tend to be in cabins or small countryside lodges, sometimes on a farm or with a view over the hills. These need a car or a taxi and are quieter, but you lose the walk-to-everything convenience. If you want a wider choice of hotels, restaurants and services, base yourself in a larger nearby town and visit San Francisco as a day trip.
