A weekend here fails when you try to cover the whole county. San Diego runs about 50 km north to south, and traffic on Interstate 5 eats an hour of a short trip. Choose one coastal zone and one central zone, then let the rest go.
Day 1: coast. Start at La Jolla for the cove and the sea lions, walk the cliff path, then move to Mission Beach or Pacific Beach for the afternoon. Sunset at Sunset Cliffs or Point Loma. Dinner back downtown or in Little Italy.
Day 2: city. Balboa Park in the morning (museums, gardens, the zoo if you commit most of a day to it), then the harbour: USS Midway, the Maritime Museum or a bay ferry to Coronado. Finish in the Gaslamp Quarter or Little Italy.

Museum and attraction prices in San Diego move most years, and the zoo and SeaWorld sell dated tickets that are cheaper online than at the gate. Treat every figure below as a 2026 estimate and confirm on the operator's site.
Most Balboa Park museums open around 10:00 and close between 16:00 and 17:00, with some closed one weekday. The zoo opens in the morning and stays open into the evening in summer. USS Midway opens mid-morning and closes late afternoon. Beaches and the La Jolla cliff path have no hours and no fee.
A city pass can pay off if you plan three or more paid attractions in a short trip, but not if you are mostly walking beaches and parks. Run the numbers against what you will actually visit.

How to get there
San Diego International Airport sits about 5 km from downtown, one of the closest big-city airports to a city centre in the US. A taxi or rideshare to a downtown hotel is usually 10–15 minutes outside peak traffic. The trolley and buses connect the airport area to downtown, but most visitors with luggage take a car.
By train, Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner runs along the coast from Los Angeles and Orange County into downtown San Diego, with the Santa Fe Depot within walking distance of the waterfront. This is the easiest car-free way in from LA.
By car, Interstate 5 and Interstate 15 bring you in from the north and east. Traffic is heavy on weekday mornings and late afternoons, and parking downtown is expensive. If your weekend is downtown and La Jolla only, you can skip the rental car and use the trolley, buses and rideshares.
Once here, the trolley covers downtown, Old Town and the border area. La Jolla and the northern beaches are easier by bus plus rideshare, or by car.
