San Diego rewards walking and boats more than buses. The historic core, the waterfront and Coronado are compact, so a guide adds context rather than transport. Pick one paid tour that matches your interest, then use the trolley, ferry and Coaster train for the rest.

For first-timers, a small-group walking or food tour in the historic core gives the orientation a guidebook cannot: which blocks are worth your evening, what to order, and how the neighbourhoods connect. For families, the aircraft carrier museum and a harbour cruise do more work than any coach loop.
