San Diego County runs from the Pacific to snow-capped mountains and desert in about 90 minutes of driving. The city of San Diego holds the beaches, the zoo and the food; North County holds the quieter coastal towns and the Sprinter rail line; the inland east is mountains and desert with almost no transit. Base in the city, and only move hotels if you are heading to the desert or the border.
