  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

San Clemente is a small Orange County beach town on Interstate 5, roughly halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego. Its draw is the pier, the coastal trail and a walkable village of Spanish-style buildings. Sights are few, so most travellers use it for one or two nights, or as a day stop on the coastal train.

Arrive & move

Getting around

The village, pier and beach are walkable, but the slope from the pier up to Avenida Del Mar is real. A free trolley runs daily from Memorial Day to September and on weekends year-round, linking the pier, Avenida Del Mar, El Camino Real and the Outlets, about every 15 min. Metrolink and Amtrak Pacific Surfliner stop at the pier and North Beach stations. A car helps for Trestles, San Clemente State Beach and the outlets.

Laguna Beach

go

Door to door: About 30–40 min by car

Car on I-5 and Route 133, or train to Laguna Niguel then a rideshare

Coves, galleries and a busier village; go on a weekday in summer.

San Juan Capistrano

go

Door to door: About 20 min

Metrolink or Pacific Surfliner north, then a short walk

Mission and old town; pairs well with a train day.

Newport Beach

caution

Door to door: About 40–50 min

Car on I-5 and Route 55, or train to Irvine then a rideshare

Better as its own stop than a return day trip.

Los Angelesovernight

Door to door: 1.5–2.5 h

Pacific Surfliner from the pier station, or car on I-5

Too far for a comfortable same-day return; sleep there.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Pier and Avenida Victoria

Walk to the beach, pier and Casa Romantica; the priciest rooms and the loudest summer weekends.

Avenida Del Mar village

Cafés, shops and restaurants on foot; a 10–15 min downhill walk to the pier.

North El Camino Real

Chain hotels, free parking and easy I-5 access; you need a car or the trolley for the beach.

South El Camino Real / Outlets

Outlet mall, golf course and State Beach; good for drivers heading to San Diego.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime beach town; the real risks are rip currents, sunburn and summer traffic on I-5. Swim near lifeguard towers and never turn your back on the surf.
  • Pacific Surfliner trains stop here only a few times a day: check times before you build a plan around the train.
  • Metrolink service to the two San Clemente stations is weekend-only on the Orange County and Inland Empire–Orange County lines: check the timetable.
  • Parking near the pier is pay-and-display and fills by mid-morning in summer; free 2-hour parking exists further inland.
  • The beach trail has stairs and a slope; not all of it is step-free.
  • Summer coastal fog can sit over the beach until midday: plan beach time for the afternoon.
  • Trestles is a famous surf break with limited parking and a walk in: go early or skip it.
