San Clemente is a small Orange County beach town on Interstate 5, roughly halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego. Its draw is the pier, the coastal trail and a walkable village of Spanish-style buildings. Sights are few, so most travellers use it for one or two nights, or as a day stop on the coastal train.

Get around
The village, pier and beach are walkable, but the slope from the pier up to Avenida Del Mar is real. A free trolley runs daily from Memorial Day to September and on weekends year-round, linking the pier, Avenida Del Mar, El Camino Real and the Outlets, about every 15 min. Metrolink and Amtrak Pacific Surfliner stop at the pier and North Beach stations. A car helps for Trestles, San Clemente State Beach and the outlets.

- Parking near the pier is pay-and-display and fills by mid-morning in summer; free 2-hour parking exists further inland.
- The beach trail has stairs and a slope; not all of it is step-free.
- Summer coastal fog can sit over the beach until midday: plan beach time for the afternoon.
- Trestles is a famous surf break with limited parking and a walk in: go early or skip it.
A low-crime beach town; the real risks are rip currents, sunburn and summer traffic on I-5. Swim near lifeguard towers and never turn your back on the surf.
