Best time to visit Salzburg: weather, crowds and events by month

If you want one window, take the first half of June or the second half of September. Both sit inside the parent country's 'best' band for Salzburg and the lakes, with medium crowds and medium prices, and both let you pair the city with a day at Wolfgangsee or Hallstatt without the August crush.

Choose July or August only if warm weather and festival evenings matter more than cost and quiet. Choose December for the Christmas markets and accept short, grey days. Choose April or November only if a low price beats good weather — many Alpine hotels and lifts shut in those months.

Salzburg sits in the wet Alpine-foreland zone. The country page calls it one of Austria's wettest cities and warns about 'Schnürlregen' — steady drizzle that can last days. That is the single most useful planning fact: rain is possible in every month, so a waterproof shell and shoes you do not mind soaking matter more than the exact week you book.

Summer days reach the high 20s °C and occasionally low 30s, with afternoon thunderstorms in the Alps. Winter days hover near freezing, often with fog or low cloud in the valley while the mountains above are sunny. Spring and autumn are the swing seasons: pleasant when clear, raw when not.

Salzburg's calendar has two spikes. The first is the Salzburg Festival, running late July to the end of August, when the country page notes hotel rates roughly double and opera and theatre tickets sell out months ahead. The second is December, when the Christmas markets fill the old town and weekend hotel prices climb.

Outside those windows the city is manageable. April, May, October and November are the low-price months, and even in June and September you can usually find a room at short notice. If your dates are fixed to the festival or to a December weekend, book accommodation first and build the trip around it.

Austrian public holidays close shops and fill trains. The ones most likely to affect a Salzburg trip are Easter Monday (late March or April), 1 May, the Ascension–Whit–Corpus Christi run in May and June, Assumption on 15 August, and National Day on 26 October. Expect long-weekend demand on those dates.

The Salzburg Festival is the big one for this city. Beyond it, Advent markets from mid-November into December are the other reason people come, and the ski season in the province runs roughly December to April.

Prices below are 2026 estimates for a mid-range double room in the city, not for festival or Christmas weekends. Treat them as bands, not quotes.

Anchor the trip on the season you can actually travel, then adjust the plan rather than the dates. In wet months, front-load indoor Salzburg — the old town, the fortress, the museums — and keep a mountain day flexible for the first clear morning. In July and August, start outdoor days early and be back in the city before the afternoon storms.

If you are combining Salzburg with the lakes, remember the lake season is short: the country page puts swimming at July and August only. June and September still work well for walking around Wolfgangsee and Hallstatt, just without the swimming.
