Salzburg airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

The airport sits close to the city, so the choice is mostly about luggage and arrival time rather than distance. Buses are cheap and frequent; taxis cost more but drop you at the door of a hotel inside the pedestrian zone's edge.

Salzburg airport has no railway station. The city trolleybus lines 2 and 10 connect the terminal with Salzburg Hauptbahnhof, the main station, in about 20 minutes. From Hauptbahnhof the old town is a 15–20 minute walk across the river, or one stop on an S-Bahn line toward the city centre. Buses run through the day and into the evening; exact first and last departures change with the season, so check the operator timetable for your date.

Buy a ticket from the driver or in the operator app. Austrian city buses usually accept cash and often cards, but not always both, so keep a few euro coins as a backup. The same ticket covers the city zone, which means you can continue on the S-Bahn without paying again if you stay inside the zone and within the validity window.

Taxis wait outside the arrivals hall. A ride to the city centre takes 15–20 minutes outside rush hour and costs roughly €20–30 in 2026, more at night or with heavy traffic on the Innsbrucker Bundesstraße. Drivers take cards in most cars, but ask before you get in if that matters to you.

Pre-booked transfers and hotel pickups cost a little more, usually €30–50, and give you a fixed price and a driver holding a name sign. They make sense for families, ski bags, or arrivals after the last bus. Ride-hailing is limited in Salzburg; do not count on it as your main plan.

For one person with a backpack, the bus is the clear winner at about €3. Two people with normal luggage still save money on the bus. Three or four people with bags often find a taxi cheaper per person than four bus tickets plus the walk, especially in rain or snow.

If you are heading straight on to Hallstatt, Zell am See or Vienna, buy your onward rail ticket at Hauptbahnhof or in the ÖBB app; a Sparschiene advance fare can be far cheaper than a walk-up ticket, but it ties you to one specific train.

Allow extra time in winter. Snow and ice slow the buses and taxis, and the airport gets busy on winter weekends when ski charters land together. If you have a train to catch, leave at least an hour between landing and your departure from Hauptbahnhof.

The airport is small and quick to exit, so if you travel with hand luggage only you can often be on a bus within 30 minutes of the doors opening. For the return leg, buses toward the airport run from the station side; check the stop direction carefully, as both directions use similar stops.
