Weather by region
Austria has four useful climate zones for planning. Vienna and the east (Vienna, Wachau, Burgenland, Graz) are dry and continental: best April–June and September–October, hot in July–August up to 35 °C, cold and grey in winter. Salzburg and the lakes (Salzburg, Hallstatt, Wolfgangsee) are best June–September; Salzburg is one of the wettest cities in the country, so a rain jacket is worth carrying in any month, and the lakes are swimmable mainly in July and August.

Holidays and events that change prices
A few dates move hotel rates and train loads more than the weather does.
