Saarland is Germany's smallest non-city state: 2,572 km², about 1 million people, wedged between France and Luxembourg. It is known for two things — heavy-industry heritage (the Völklinger Hütte ironworks, a UNESCO site) and the Saarschleife river bend — plus a food scene with the most Michelin stars per capita of any German state. No point in Saarland is more than about 100 km, or 1 h 30, from any other, so one base covers the region. Sleep in Saarbrücken for trains and restaurants, or in Saarlouis or Merzig for a quieter, cheaper stay on the Saar.
