Rzeszów is the capital of Podkarpackie and the biggest city in south-east Poland, a compact Old Town of about 180,000 people on the E40 between Kraków and the Ukrainian border. The centre is small enough to walk in half a day, and the city works best as a base for Łańcut, Przemyśl and the region rather than as a destination on its own.

The Old Town is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. City buses cover the New Town and suburbs; buy tickets at kiosks and validate on board. Cycle paths are good but bike parking is scarce.

Safety

Rzeszów is a calm, low-crime city; the real risks are winter ice on pavements, unvalidated bus tickets and overpriced airport taxis.
  • Bus tickets must be validated on board or you risk a fine.
  • The castle interior is closed to the public (law courts); walk the walls instead.
  • The Jewish cemetery on ul. Dołowa is walled and the gate is usually locked.
  • Airport taxis can run over 100 zł because the route leaves the city zone: the train or bus 51 is far cheaper.
