How to get from Kyoto to Nara

The fastest way is the Kintetsu limited express from Kintetsu-Kyoto Station to Kintetsu-Nara. It runs non-stop or with one stop and takes about 35 minutes. A reserved seat costs roughly ¥1,300–1,600 (2026 estimate). You can also ride the same line on a local or express train for around ¥600–800, which takes 45–60 minutes depending on stops.

The cheapest option is a Kintetsu local or the JR Miyakoji rapid service from Kyoto Station to JR Nara. Both cost roughly ¥600–800 (2026 estimate) and take 45–70 minutes. JR is the one to pick if you hold a Japan Rail Pass, since Kintetsu is a private railway and is not covered.

For a day trip, either works. Kintetsu-Nara is closer to Nara Park and the Great Buddha hall, about a 10–15 minute walk. JR Nara is a bit further out, roughly 20–25 minutes on foot or a short bus ride.

Two rail operators run the route, plus buses and taxis. The table below compares the main choices. Prices are 2026 estimates and can change; check the operator site before you travel.

You do not need to book in advance for this route. Both Kintetsu and JR sell tickets at station machines and staffed counters, and you can also tap an IC card such as ICOCA or Suica on the gates for the local and rapid services. The Kintetsu limited express needs a limited-express ticket on top of the base fare; buy it at the machine or counter before boarding.

If you want a reserved seat on the limited express, buy at the station on the day or use the operator's official app or website. For JR services, the JR West site and app sell tickets, and a Japan Rail Pass covers the JR Nara line. Kintetsu tickets are not covered by the JR Pass.

For buses, seats are usually first-come, first-served, so arrive early at the stop. Taxis can be hailed at Kyoto Station or booked through an app.

Leave Kyoto before 08:00 if you want Nara Park and the Great Buddha hall before the crowds. The deer are most active in the morning and the temple halls are quieter.

Check which Nara station you need. Kintetsu-Nara is closer to Nara Park; JR Nara is better if you are continuing to Osaka or using a JR Pass. The two stations are about a 15-minute walk apart.

Carry cash for small shops and buses in Nara; not every place takes cards. An IC card works on most trains and city buses.

A Japan Rail Pass often does not pay off for a Kansai-only trip. Compare the pass price against individual fares before buying.

Both rail lines run south from Kyoto into Nara Prefecture. Kintetsu-Kyoto is in the south of the city, near Kyoto Station but a separate building; JR Kyoto Station is the main rail hub. Kintetsu-Nara and JR Nara are both in central Nara, within walking distance of each other and of the main sights.

The route is short and flat, so there is no scenic reason to pick one line over the other. Choose by station location, price and whether your rail pass covers it.
