Nara was Japan's capital in the 8th century and keeps a cluster of temples and shrines in a single park. Todai-ji houses a large bronze Buddha, and free-roaming deer are a signature sight. It is under an hour from Kyoto or Osaka by train.

Getting around
Most sights are in and around Nara Park and reachable on foot; buses run to more distant temples. Kintetsu and JR lines connect to Kyoto and Osaka. There is no airport; use Osaka's (KIX or ITM).

- Deer may bite or nudge for food: keep paper and snacks out of sight.
- Crowds in the park at midday; go early.
