How to get from Hanoi to Sapa

Two practical ways cover the 300-odd km from Hanoi to Sa Pa: the night train to Lào Cai plus a road transfer, or a direct bus that climbs all the way to town. Both leave in the evening or late afternoon, so you sleep through most of the trip and wake up in the mountains.

Fares move with demand and season; treat the numbers below as 2026 estimates and confirm at booking. Soft-sleeper trains and VIP buses cost more than the basic tiers.

The railway runs from Hanoi to Lào Cai near the Chinese border, with the best-known departures leaving in the evening and arriving early morning. You then cover the last 35 km uphill to Sa Pa by shuttle, taxi or minibus, about an hour. Some operators sell a combined train-and-transfer ticket; otherwise arrange the road leg at Lào Cai station or in advance.

Book a sleeper berth rather than a hard seat for the overnight run. Soft-sleeper cabins (four berths) are more comfortable than six-berth hard sleepers. Bring layers: the air conditioning can be cold, and Sa Pa sits at altitude, so mornings are chilly even when Hanoi is hot.

Direct sleeper and limousine buses run from Hanoi to Sa Pa town without a change, taking roughly 5–6 hours depending on traffic and the mountain road. Evening departures let you sleep and arrive in the morning; some operators run daytime services. This is usually the cheapest and often the fastest door-to-door option.

The final stretch is a winding climb, so if you are prone to motion sickness, take a seat near the front and travel on a fuller stomach. Buses pick up from points around the Old Quarter and from the main bus stations; confirm your exact pickup when you book.

Book the train through the official railway operator or at a Hanoi station ticket office; third-party agents add a fee but can bundle the Lào Cai transfer. For buses, book directly with the operator or through a reputable ticket desk in the Old Quarter. In peak season and around Vietnamese public holidays, berths and seats sell out days ahead, so reserve early.

Pay in đồng where you can. If you book online, check whether the price is per person and whether a transfer is included. Keep a screenshot of your booking and the operator's phone number in case pickup details change.

Sa Pa is much cooler than Hanoi, so pack a warm layer and a light rain shell. The town is walkable, but many villages and viewpoints need a taxi, motorbike or guided trek to reach. If you only have a couple of nights, take the night train or bus up and a daytime service back so you see the scenery.

Altitude and the winding road affect some travellers; take the first day gently. Change money in Hanoi or Lào Cai — options in Sa Pa are limited and rates vary.
