  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Richmond is a small eastern-Indiana city on I-70, about 70 minutes from Indianapolis and 45 from Dayton. It is a car town: sights sit along National Road and downtown, and the draw is early recording history plus a cluster of small museums. Most travellers pass through on I-70 or stop one night; a single unhurried day covers the core.

A car is the practical choice: sights are spread along National Road and downtown, and parking is free or cheap. Watch out

Safety

Richmond is a small city with ordinary US small-city risk: most of it is property crime, and the practical hazards are I-70 traffic, winter ice and unlit rural roads at night. Keep to lit areas downtown after dark and lock your car.
  • Museum hours are limited and change by season: confirm before you drive out.
  • Some sites, including the Gaar House, open only on set days or by appointment.
  • Summer afternoons are hot and humid; plan indoor stops midday.
  • Winter ice on I-70 and rural roads is the main travel risk.
  • The nearest Amtrak station is in Connersville, not Richmond: check the timetable before planning a rail arrival.
