Maribo is Lolland's inland junction town, 5,700 people, built around a 15th-century convent whose church is now the cathedral. The reason to stop is the lake edge: Søndersø and the surrounding Maribo Lakes National Park, plus Bangs Have park with its open-air museum and the Bandholm museum railway. Trains and buses both meet here, so it works as a night between Nakskov and Nykøbing Falster rather than a destination in itself.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Local buses are infrequent; two local taxi firms operate. Bikes can be rented through the tourist office. Lollandsbanen connects Nakskov and Nykøbing Falster, about 25 min each way.

Watch out

Safety

Maribo is a small, quiet town and violent crime is rare. The real issues are thin evening lighting away from the centre, infrequent buses, and cycling on unlit country roads after dark.
  • Local buses run a handful of times a day: check times before you rely on one.
  • The tourist office and several small museums keep short, seasonal hours: check before travelling for them.
  • The pub by the station is a very local spot; if you want a quiet drink, the cafés on the main street are easier.
  • Outside the centre, pavements and lighting thin out quickly after dark.
