Lampeter is a town of about 3,000 people on the River Teifi in Ceredigion, mid-Wales, and the home of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David — the third-oldest university in Britain after Oxford and Cambridge. Its campus sits on the site of a 12th-century castle, and the town is small enough to walk end to end in 15 minutes. There is no railway station, so you arrive by bus, and one night covers the town plus a half-day at Dolaucothi Gold Mines.

Getting around

Walk. The centre is flat and compact, and everything in town is within about 15 minutes on foot. Buses (TrawsCymru T1) link Lampeter with Carmarthen and Aberystwyth; taxis cover the surrounding villages and the Falcondale. A car is only needed for day trips to the gold mines, the coast or the hills.

Safety

Lampeter is a quiet, low-crime town and feels safe on foot by day and evening. The real risks are rural: narrow roads, fast-changing weather on the hills, and a long wait if you miss the last bus.
  • No railway station: the nearest railheads are Carmarthen and Aberystwyth, both about 1 h away by bus.
  • Sunday buses are few (about four each way) and the last weekday bus from Carmarthen leaves in the early evening — check the timetable before a late arrival.
  • Rural roads are narrow, hedge-lined and often single-track: drive slowly and use passing places.
  • Weather changes fast on the hills; carry a waterproof even on a clear morning.
  • Small-town hours: many cafés and shops close by late afternoon and some shut on Sundays.
