Ajijic is a Pueblo Mágico on Lake Chapala, about an hour south of Guadalajara and 30–40 minutes from GDL airport. It is a small town of cobblestone streets, murals and a large English-speaking expat community, so it is easy without Spanish but prices run higher than inland Jalisco. Two nights covers the town; add a night if you want the lake villages.

Getting around

Ajijic is walkable in the centre, but the cobblestones are uneven and hard with a suitcase or wheelchair. Local buses run along the carretera and some side streets; fares are low (M$7–9 within town and to Chapala or Jocotepec). Taxis and ride-hailing cover short hops and the airport run. A car helps for Lake Chapala villages, but parking in Centro is tight.

Watch out

Safety

Ajijic is generally calm and easy for visitors, with a large expat community and English widely spoken. The real risks are uneven cobblestones, carretera traffic, summer rain and heat, and unposted bar prices: ask before you sit.
  • Cobblestone streets and narrow sidewalks: wear shoes with grip and watch your step at night.
  • Traffic on the carretera (the main through-road) can be heavy; crossing takes care.
  • Lake Chapala has a history of pollution and water hyacinth; swimming and eating lake fish are not recommended (check current conditions).
  • Many hotels and rentals have no A/C and only floor fans; ask before booking in the warm months.
  • Some restaurants and bars do not post prices; ask the total before ordering.
