Udaipur is Rajasthan at a slower pace: a walled old city on Lake Pichola, a hilltop palace, and day trips to Chittorgarh and Kumbhalgarh. Two nights covers the core; three lets you add a fort without rushing. The old city is walkable, the heat is not — go September to March.

Getting around

The old city is on foot — lanes are too narrow for cars. Tuk-tuks cost about ₹50–100 within the city; agree the fare first or use Uber/Ola. A taxi is needed for Monsoon Palace, Sajjangarh and the airport.

Watch out

Safety

Udaipur is one of the calmer big stops in Rajasthan. The real risks are summer heat, tuk-tuk fare haggling, and touts selling 'government' tours — book trains and cars yourself.
  • Summer heat Apr–Jun is dangerous for sightseeing; start at opening.
  • Agree tuk-tuk fares before you get in; ₹100 (≈ US$2) is the ceiling inside the city.
  • City Palace museum ticket and grounds ticket are separate — check which gate you want.
  • Monsoon Palace road is steep and unlit after dark; go for sunset and leave with the crowd.
