Ashford is a market town in central Kent and a rail junction: high-speed trains reach London St Pancras in about 35–37 minutes, and Canterbury, Dover, Folkestone, Ramsgate and Margate are all short hops away. The town centre is ordinary; the reasons to stop are the Designer Outlet, the surrounding villages and the North Downs walks. Most travellers use it as a bed for one or two nights rather than a destination.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15–20 minutes. Stagecoach runs most local buses; a hire car is the practical way to reach villages, vineyards and the North Downs. Taxis are plentiful but book ahead for early trains. High-speed Southeastern trains from London St Pancras take about 35–37 minutes; slower services from Charing Cross, Cannon Street and Victoria take about 80 minutes and cost less.

Safety

A low-crime town; the real issues are dark winter evenings, unlit country lanes and fast traffic on the A20 and A28. Standard UK advice applies: 999 in an emergency, 101 for non-urgent police.
  • No Eurostar stops at Ashford: the international service is suspended with no confirmed restart date. Do not plan a Paris or Brussels trip through Ashford.
  • Ashford International is the station name, but check your platform and operator: Southeastern and Southern run different routes to London.
  • Kings Wood is large and people have needed police help after getting lost: take a charged phone and stick to marked paths.
