  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Swansboro is a small waterfront town of about 3,700 people on the White Oak River, at the western edge of the Crystal Coast. The draw is a compact historic Front Street of shops and seafood restaurants, free parking, and Hammocks Beach State Park, whose Bear Island is reached by passenger ferry in summer. Most travellers see it in a half-day and sleep one night, or use it as a lunch stop while moving along NC-24 between Jacksonville and the beaches.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

You need a car. NC-24 is the spine: Jacksonville is about 30 min west, Cape Carteret and Emerald Isle 10–25 min east, Morehead City about 30 min. Downtown parking is free and Front Street is walkable in 10 minutes end to end; bikes work well on the flat lanes and the 25-mile Bicentennial Bicycle Trail loops through town into the Croatan National Forest. No useful local bus service.

NC-24 west then US-70 north, about 30 min by car

Small town; only worth a stop if you are already heading that way.

Cape Carteret

go

Door to door: About 10 min

Across the White Oak River bridge on NC-24, about 5 min

Closest grocery and pharmacy run; useful errand stop.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown / Front Street

Walk to shops, restaurants and the waterfront; very few rooms, so book early.

Cedar Point Boulevard (NC-24)

The main motel strip just across the river; 5–10 min drive to Front Street, free parking.

Emerald Isle and Cedar Point

Beach-side rentals 15–25 min east; better for a week with a car.

Morehead City / Beaufort

25–35 min east; more restaurants and hotels, good if you want a bigger base.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime small town; the real risks are summer heat, rip currents on the beaches, and hurricane-season storms. Lock the car, keep valuables out of sight, and check surf conditions before swimming.
  • Summer is hot and humid; plan walking for early morning.
  • Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov, peaking Aug–Oct: watch forecasts and know your evacuation route.
  • Bear Island ferry is seasonal and pets are not allowed on board.
  • Restaurant kitchens in a small town close early and some shut on Mondays or Tuesdays: check before you drive out.
