Alcácer do Sal

Give Alcácer do Sal one night as a quiet Sado stop between Lisbon and the Alentejo; add Comporta only if you have a car and want the beach.

Alcácer do Sal is a small riverside town of about 6,700 people on the Sado, an hour south of Lisbon by car. The castle and the rice fields are the draw; the coast at Comporta, inside the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve, is 20–30 km west and needs a car or a taxi. Most travellers pass through in a night or use it as a cheaper, quieter base for the Comporta beaches.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Iberia ↗Plan meals on the Iberian clock: Spanish kitchens serve lunch from about 13:30–14:00 and dinner from 20:30–21:00; Portugal eats an hour or so earlier. Early evenings are for tapas or petiscos, not full meals.
  • Iberia ↗Inland Spain and Portugal (Seville, Córdoba, Madrid, the Alentejo) pass 40 °C in heatwaves from late June to August: sightsee before 11:00 and after 18:00, and keep July–August for the coasts and the green north.
  • Iberia ↗Andorra and Gibraltar have their own border and customs rules and are reached only through Spain (or France for Andorra); read their pages before adding them, especially if you hold a limited Schengen visa.
  • Portugal ↗Portugal is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • Portugal ↗Alfa Pendular and Intercidades trains assign seats: book Lisbon–Porto ahead in summer and on holiday weekends.
  • Portugal ↗Many motorways, including the Algarve's A22, use electronic tolls only: ask the hire company for a transponder before you drive off.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the coast, the rice museum and the stilt harbour are all off the town's walking area and buses are thin. In town everything is walkable in 10–15 minutes. Taxis and transfers to Comporta exist but are expensive and hard to book at night.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are summer heat, unlit rural roads at night and cold Atlantic water. Use 112 for anything urgent.
  • Comporta is 20–30 km (12–19 mi) from Alcácer do Sal: without a car you are dependent on taxis or a tour.
  • Summer weekends fill the coast; book beds and restaurants ahead in Jul–Aug.
  • Atlantic water here is cold even in August; the beaches are for sun, not long swims.
  • Many small restaurants close one weekday and shut early outside summer: check before you drive out.
  • The Sado estuary is a nature reserve: keep to marked paths and do not disturb nesting birds.
