Berlin, ConnecticutBerlin

Skip Berlin as a base: it is a 1-night rail stop or a half-day between Hartford and New Haven. Sleep in Hartford or New Haven instead.

Berlin is a small central-Connecticut town of about 20,000 people on the Hartford Line, roughly 15 minutes by train from Hartford and 30 from New Haven. There is no town centre to walk: the Amtrak/CTrail station sits in Kensington, the shops and hotels line the Berlin Turnpike, and the rest is wooded suburb. It works as a cheap rail-adjacent bed and a base for the New Britain Museum of American Art, not as a destination in itself.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the practical answer: sights, shops and hotels are spread along Route 5/15 and Route 372 with no useful bus coverage. CTrail Hartford Line and Amtrak stop at Berlin station (51 Depot Road) for Hartford, New Haven and Springfield. Rideshare exists but waits can run 10–20 min in the evening; taxis are few.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime suburb; the real risks are the Berlin Turnpike traffic, winter ice on I-91 and Route 9, and ticks on the wooded trails from May to July.
  • Berlin station is in Kensington, not the town centre: check which side you need before booking a bed.
  • The Berlin Turnpike is a fast multi-lane commercial strip: cross only at signals, and never walk it after dark.
  • Winter ice on I-91 and Route 9 causes pile-ups; keep extra distance and check CTroads before driving.
  • Weekday Hartford Line trains are commuter-heavy at 07:00–09:00 and 16:30–18:30; off-peak seats are easy.
