Nattai National Park

Go only if you want a remote, unmarked bushwalk: no entry fee, no facilities, no phone signal in the valley. Drive to the Wattle Ridge fire-road car park, sign the logbook, and walk the Starlights Trail down to the Nattai River; skip it if you want lookouts, cafés or a short paved walk.

Rules in force · 7
  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Nattai is the quiet south-west corner of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area: a deep sandstone valley cut by the Nattai and Wollondilly rivers, upstream of Warragamba Dam, the reservoir that supplies Sydney. There is no visitor centre, no campground and no formed walking track network. Access is by car on fire roads, and the walking is route-finding on indistinct trails through dry eucalypt forest. That is the point: on most days you will see no one. It suits experienced bushwalkers with a map, compass and water; it does not suit a first-time visitor expecting a Blue Mountains-style lookout and boardwalk.

Sign in and out at the car park board; there is no other way for anyone to know you are in the valley.
Lake Burragorang exclusion zone
No entry and no camping in the reservoir catchment on the park's northern edge.
Camping
Bush camping is allowed outside the exclusion zone; there are no campgrounds and no facilities, so use a small-footprint tent and do not damage plants.

Water
Treat all water taken from rivers and creeks; towns upstream mean a Giardia risk.

Where to stay

In the park

Bush camping at Emmetts Flat

A riverside clearing on the Nattai with no facilities; carry everything in and out.

Near the park

Mittagong and Bowral

Motels, pubs and guesthouses in the Southern Highlands, 30–60 min from the access road.

Safety

Bushfire high

In summer the park can burn and be closed; check the fire danger rating and park alerts before leaving, and have a plan to turn around.

Route-finding on indistinct trails high

Carry a topographic map and compass and know how to use them; fires clear undergrowth and can erase the track.

No phone signal in the valley medium

Phones may work on the high plateau but not in the valley; sign the logbook and tell someone your plan.

Snakes medium

Carry snake bandages and know how to apply them; wear long trousers and boots, and watch where you put hands and feet.

Thorny vines, spiky plants and stinging nettles low

After heavy rain near the river, cover legs and hands; the undergrowth gets dense.

Wombat burrows and disturbed ground low

Watch your footing on the flats, especially in low light.

How much daylight do you have?

computed for this spot

Time out

Finding the local time zone…

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Accessibility

  • Wollondilly lookout is reached by car with a short walk from parking.
  • The Starlights Trail is steep, rough and unmarked, with about 550 m of descent; not suitable for limited mobility or for young children.

Visiting lightly

  • Stay on durable surfaces where a route exists; the trails are faint and easily widened.
  • Carry out all rubbish, including food scraps, and bury human waste away from water.
  • Camp in small groups with small-footprint tents to limit damage to plants.
  • Treat the Lake Burragorang catchment as closed; it is Sydney's drinking water.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Nattai National Park?

Nothing. There is no entry fee, no gate and no vehicle charge for Nattai; you drive in on Wattle Ridge Fire Road and sign the logbook at the car park. NSW national parks do charge for some parks and campgrounds, so check the park alerts page before you go.

What are the best hikes in Nattai National Park?

The Starlights Trail is the main one: about 6.5 km each way from the Wattle Ridge car park down to Emmetts Flat on the Nattai River, with roughly 550 m of descent. Russells Needle extends it south to a rock spire. The Couridjah Corridor walk, about 14 km past Thirlmere Lakes, is in a neighbouring park. All of it is unmarked route-finding.

When is the best time to visit Nattai National Park?

April, May, September and October. Days are mild and dry, snakes are less active than in summer, and the air is clear. Avoid January and February, when heat and total fire ban days can close the park, and expect frosty nights in June and July.

Do I need a 4WD to get to Nattai?

No. Wattle Ridge Fire Road is unsealed but a normal car can reach the small unpaved car park at the park edge. The road can be rough after heavy rain, so check conditions.

Can I camp in Nattai National Park?

Yes, bush camping is allowed outside the Lake Burragorang exclusion zone, but there are no campgrounds and no facilities. Emmetts Flat on the Nattai River is the usual spot. Carry in all water and carry out all rubbish.

Is there mobile phone reception in Nattai?

On the highest parts of the plateau around the access road, sometimes. In the valley, no. Sign the logbook and leave your plan with someone before you walk in.
