Armadale is the Sleat peninsula's ferry port and main village, 45 min by CalMac from Mallaig on the mainland. It has a ruined castle, gardens and the Museum of the Isles, a handful of cafés and one bar, and a scatter of B&Bs and hotels along the A851. Most travellers pass through on the way to Broadford and Portree; a night here makes sense if the ferry timing suits you or you want a quiet southern base with a car.

Getting around

The pier, Ardvasar and Armadale Castle are a short walk apart. Everything else on Sleat needs wheels: Stagecoach Bus 52 runs 3–4 times daily to Broadford, Sligachan and Portree, connecting with the ferries. Car hire is available locally from Drive Skye.

Watch out

Safety

Sleat is quiet and low-crime; the real risks are single-track roads with passing places, midges in summer, and walking the Point of Sleat or Dunscaith without proper boots and a weather check.
  • Do not arrive at Mallaig without a ferry booking in summer: sailings fill and the next space can be hours away.
  • The castle ruin is unsafe and fenced — you cannot go inside.
  • Mobile data is patchy: 4G from O2 and Vodafone, poor on EE and Three, no 5G.
  • Dunscaith Castle and the Point of Sleat path are rough and boggy in places; wear boots and tell someone your plan.
