Ravenstein
Give Ravenstein 2–3 hours on foot, not a night: gates, ramparts and a riverside walk, then move on to Nijmegen, Oss or 's-Hertogenbosch.
Ravenstein is a small fortified town on the Meuse, once a self-governing lordship that kept its own laws until Revolutionary France annexed it in 1794. The old centre is a compact ring of monument-listed houses inside former defence walls, with two surviving gates and two rebuilt ramparts. It is a half-day stop on the Nijmegen–'s-Hertogenbosch rail line, not a destination in itself: most travellers see it between two bigger bases.

The whole historic centre is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. From the station it is just under 1 km to the edge of the centre; the main visitor car park is on Bleek. OV-fiets rental bikes sit at the station but need an OV-chipkaart or the OVpay app.

Watch out
Safety
- Restaurants and the tourist information point keep short, irregular hours; several close early in the week — check before you travel.
- The station is outside the old centre: allow 10–15 minutes on foot each way, more with bags.
- Rampart salutes happen a few times a year and are loud; nothing dangerous, but not a quiet afternoon if you are nearby.
- The Meuse here is a working river with strong current and commercial traffic: swim nowhere, and keep an eye on children on the quay.
