Quincy, MassachusettsQuincy

Base in Boston and ride the Red Line out for one day, or sleep in Quincy Center for 1–2 nights if you want the Adams sites at opening time.

Quincy is a residential South Shore city of about 92,000 people, 20–30 minutes from downtown Boston on the MBTA Red Line. It is the birthplace of John Adams and John Quincy Adams, and the granite quarries here supplied the stone for much of Boston. Most visitors come for the Adams National Historical Park and the USS Salem, then return to Boston for the night.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

The MBTA Red Line runs from Boston through North Quincy, Wollaston and Quincy Center to Braintree. Buses numbered in the 200s leave from Quincy Center. Most sights sit within walking distance of a Red Line stop, but the USS Salem and the quarries need a bus or a car.

Watch out

Safety

Quincy is a normal, safe Boston suburb; the main risks are winter ice on pavements, traffic on Hancock Street and Southern Artery, and unlit paths around the quarries after dark.
  • Adams National Historical Park homes are open Apr–Nov only, and you must join a tour: the last tour leaves mid-afternoon (check the official site).
  • Bars in Quincy close at 1 AM, an hour earlier than Boston.
  • Wollaston Beach parking is free but fills on hot weekends; the water is Boston Harbor, not open ocean.
  • Sales tax is added at the till; the price on the shelf is not the price you pay.
