EastportEastport, Maine
Go for 1–2 nights as a Down East stop: walk Water Street, take a boat to the Old Sow whirlpool, then drive on to Lubec or Calais.
Eastport sits on Moose Island at the meeting of Cobscook and Passamaquoddy Bays, reached by a causeway on Route 190. It is a small working town — about 1,300 people — with a compact, flat, walkable waterfront, a tidal-whirlpool boat trade and a summer arts and festival calendar. It is not a resort: come for the water, the light and the quiet, and treat it as one stop on a Down East loop rather than a destination in itself.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
The centre is flat and walkable — Water Street's shops, galleries and restaurants sit within about a quarter mile. A car is effectively required to reach Eastport and to move on to Lubec, Calais or the Cobscook Bay trails; there is no useful local bus network. Watch the speed limit through Passamaquoddy tribal lands on Route 190 — enforcement is active.

Safety
- Winter shuts much of the town: many restaurants, galleries and boat operators close or run weekends only outside Jun–Sep.
- The Old Sow whirlpool is genuinely dangerous: go with a licensed boat, never in a small private craft.
- Cell coverage and fuel are thin along US-1 east of Machias — fill up and download offline maps before the last stretch.
- Tides here run extreme (up to about 8 m / 26 ft): check the tide table before walking the breakwater or any shore path.
- Restaurant kitchens close early and some take cash only — carry some cash and eat before 20:00.Restaurant kitchens close early and some take cash only — carry some cash and eat before 8:00 PM.

Coming as the guide grows
- Airport-to-bed contract for BGR and BHB: last sensible arrival time, rental-car desk hours, overnight rung in Bangor if you land late.
- Three walking clusters with rescue anchors: Water Street core, the breakwater and boat dock, and the north-end B&B blocks.
- Place pages with verified hours for the Tides Institute, Peavey Memorial Library, Eastport Arts Center and the boat operators, plus eat pages with last orders.
- Seasonal gate: what is actually open in May and October, so shoulder-season arrivals are not stranded.
