Eastport
Eastport, Maine
Go for 1–2 nights as a Down East stop: walk Water Street, take a boat to the Old Sow whirlpool, then drive on to Lubec or Calais.
Eastport sits on Moose Island at the meeting of Cobscook and Passamaquoddy Bays, reached by a causeway on Route 190. It is a small working town — about 1,300 people — with a compact, flat, walkable waterfront, a tidal-whirlpool boat trade and a summer arts and festival calendar. It is not a resort: come for the water, the light and the quiet, and treat it as one stop on a Down East loop rather than a destination in itself.

Get around
The centre is flat and walkable — Water Street's shops, galleries and restaurants sit within about a quarter mile. A car is effectively required to reach Eastport and to move on to Lubec, Calais or the Cobscook Bay trails; there is no useful local bus network. Watch the speed limit through Passamaquoddy tribal lands on Route 190 — enforcement is active.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter shuts much of the town: many restaurants, galleries and boat operators close or run weekends only outside Jun–Sep.
- The Old Sow whirlpool is genuinely dangerous: go with a licensed boat, never in a small private craft.
- Cell coverage and fuel are thin along US-1 east of Machias — fill up and download offline maps before the last stretch.
- Tides here run extreme (up to about 8 m / 26 ft): check the tide table before walking the breakwater or any shore path.
- Restaurant kitchens close early and some take cash only — carry some cash and eat before 20:00.
Eastport is a small, low-crime town and feels safe on foot in daylight. The real hazards are water and weather: extreme tides, cold bay water, the Old Sow whirlpool, fog on US-1 and winter ice. Use 911 for emergencies.
