EastportEastport, Maine

Go for 1–2 nights as a Down East stop: walk Water Street, take a boat to the Old Sow whirlpool, then drive on to Lubec or Calais.

Eastport sits on Moose Island at the meeting of Cobscook and Passamaquoddy Bays, reached by a causeway on Route 190. It is a small working town — about 1,300 people — with a compact, flat, walkable waterfront, a tidal-whirlpool boat trade and a summer arts and festival calendar. It is not a resort: come for the water, the light and the quiet, and treat it as one stop on a Down East loop rather than a destination in itself.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Arrive & move

Getting around

The centre is flat and walkable — Water Street's shops, galleries and restaurants sit within about a quarter mile. A car is effectively required to reach Eastport and to move on to Lubec, Calais or the Cobscook Bay trails; there is no useful local bus network. Watch the speed limit through Passamaquoddy tribal lands on Route 190 — enforcement is active.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 1 h by car

Drive Route 190 to US-1 north, then Route 189 south; or a seasonal boat across the bay

West Quoddy Head light and Cobscook Bay trails; pairs well as the next overnight.

Calais, Maine

go

Door to door: About 1 h

US-1 north through Perry and Pembroke

Border town with the St. Croix River and Canadian crossing; a practical staging point north.

Jonesport

Door to door: About 2 h

Long for a return day; better as a stop on a coastal drive west.

Campobello Island, New Brunswick

go

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Drive Route 189 to Lubec, cross the bridge; passport or WHTI document required to re-enter the US

Roosevelt Campobello International Park; check bridge and park hours before you go.

Water Street (downtown)

The whole commercial strip is about a quarter mile; motels and B&Bs here put the waterfront, galleries and diners on foot.

North end / Capen Avenue

Quieter residential blocks a few minutes' walk uphill from Water Street; B&Bs here are the usual pick.

Route 190 corridor toward Perry

Mainland and causeway-side motels for drivers who want easy parking and a quick exit north.

Watch out

Safety

Eastport is a small, low-crime town and feels safe on foot in daylight. The real hazards are water and weather: extreme tides, cold bay water, the Old Sow whirlpool, fog on US-1 and winter ice. Use 911 for emergencies.
  • Winter shuts much of the town: many restaurants, galleries and boat operators close or run weekends only outside Jun–Sep.
  • The Old Sow whirlpool is genuinely dangerous: go with a licensed boat, never in a small private craft.
  • Cell coverage and fuel are thin along US-1 east of Machias — fill up and download offline maps before the last stretch.
  • Tides here run extreme (up to about 8 m / 26 ft): check the tide table before walking the breakwater or any shore path.
  • Restaurant kitchens close early and some take cash only — carry some cash and eat before 20:00.

  2. 2 airports and 3 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for BGR and BHB: last sensible arrival time, rental-car desk hours, overnight rung in Bangor if you land late.
  2. Three walking clusters with rescue anchors: Water Street core, the breakwater and boat dock, and the north-end B&B blocks.
  3. Place pages with verified hours for the Tides Institute, Peavey Memorial Library, Eastport Arts Center and the boat operators, plus eat pages with last orders.
  4. Seasonal gate: what is actually open in May and October, so shoulder-season arrivals are not stranded.
