Godbout is a small Côte-Nord village of about 300 people on Route 138, built around a deep bay that shelters it from the Gulf. Its working ferry to Matane is the main employer, and that traffic supports a handful of inns, a campground and two places to eat. Come for the ferry crossing, the Indigenous art museum and the bay; treat it as a stop on the Route des Baleines, not a destination in itself.

Getting around

The village is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. Route 138 passes about 2 km east of the centre via rue Mgr Labrie, so a car is needed for the campground, the ZEC office and anything beyond the bay. Intercar coaches run along Route 138 between Québec City and Baie-Comeau; the ferry wharf is a short walk from the inns.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are the coastal highway (moose, fatigue, no shoulder), cold water in the bay, and services that close without warning outside summer.
  • Services thin out fast outside summer: check opening dates for inns, the campground and restaurants before you commit.
  • Ferry space for cars is limited in high season; book the Matane crossing ahead.
  • Route 138 is a two-lane coastal highway with moose and long empty stretches, especially at dusk and at night.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on parts of the Côte-Nord; download maps and ferry tickets before you leave Baie-Comeau.
