Lovelock

Stop for 2–3 hours off I-80, not a night: museum, courthouse, a walk down Cornell Avenue. Sleep here only if you are driving on to Reno or Elko.

Lovelock is a small Pershing County town on Interstate 80, about 90 minutes east of Reno and 90 minutes west of Winnemucca, with a population under 2,000. It is a road-trip pause: a county museum in an 1874 house, a 1920s courthouse, a lake for camping, and a cave that gave its name to a famous archaeological find. Two to three hours covers the town; a night makes sense only as a break in a long drive.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

You need a car. I-80 runs through town with exits 105, 106 and 107; exit 106 leads to Main Street. Cornell Avenue, three blocks west of the freeway, holds most motels, food and the casino. Greyhound stops at the Chevron, 150 Main Street. There is no local bus; distances in town are short enough to walk once parked.

Lovelock Cave

caution

Door to door: About 45 min

Drive south from Lovelock on dirt roads; no signed turnoff and no facilities

Unionville

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

I-80 east to exit 119 (Oreana), then Lovelock-Unionville Road, about 22 miles

Partly improved dirt and gravel, remote. A near-ghost town of old cabins below Star Peak; Mark Twain stayed here in the 1860s.

Cornell Avenue motel strip

Most of the town's motels sit along Cornell Avenue, three blocks west of the freeway, between exits 105 and 107. Walkable to food and the small casino.

Rye Patch Reservoir

Camping about 25 min north of town off I-80 exit 129; a quieter option if you have a tent or RV.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime small town; the real risks are desert heat, long empty drives and winter ice on I-80. Lock your car, carry water, and tell someone your route if you head for the cave or Unionville.
  • Summer afternoons regularly top 35 °C (95 °F); carry water and do not walk far in the middle of the day.
  • Winter storms can close or slow I-80 over the passes; check road conditions before driving.
  • The road out to Unionville is partly dirt and gravel and very remote: no services, no phone signal in places.
  • Gambling winnings for non-US visitors can face a 30% withholding tax; keep the paperwork if you win.

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for RNO: last sensible departure time westbound, taxi and rideshare fallback, overnight rung in Reno or Lovelock.
  2. Walking cluster for the town: Cornell Avenue motels, Main Street, courthouse and museum, with a heat and storm anchor.
  3. Place pages with verified hours and fees (Marzen House Museum, Pershing County Courthouse, Rye Patch) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Desert and winter-storm arrival fixtures so I-80 gates can go green or red.
