Black Rock City is not a town you visit; it is a temporary city of roughly 60,000 people built each year on the Black Rock Desert playa for Burning Man, about 190 km north of Reno. It has no hotels, no shops and no vending: you bring your own food, water and shelter, and you must take everything out again. Plan the full event week if you can, or a 4-5 day block, and treat the drive, the heat and the dust as the main logistics.

Getting around

Park your vehicle once you are inside and move by bicycle, on foot or on a licensed art car. Bikes need wide tyres, a lock and front and rear lights at night; the alkaline dust eats moving parts, so clean and oil them during the week. Walking is fine and often easier for stopping at installations.

Watch out

Safety

The desert is the risk, not crime: heat, dehydration, dust storms and rain closures. Drink about 4 litres of water a day, keep electrolytes, and follow the official Survival Guide.
  • No ticket, no entry: Burning Man is ticketed and sells out; buy only through the official sale.
  • Heat and dehydration: temperatures regularly pass 38°C with no natural shade; drink about 4 litres of water a day, one with electrolytes.
  • Rain can close the playa: in 2023 heavy rain stranded attendees and delayed the exit for two days.
  • Leave No Trace is enforced: pack out all trash, including burned material and cigarette butts.
  • Vehicles are stopped inside the city; driving without cause can get you ticketed.
  • Drug use is common but discreet; vending of any kind, including for illegal substances, is not tolerated.
