Tenancingo is a colonial town of about 14,000 people in Mexico State, roughly an hour southwest of Mexico City and 40 minutes from Toluca. It is a working textile town, not a resort: the draw is the rebozo weaving tradition, two sandstone churches on the plaza, and a white Cristo Rey statue on Cerro de las Tres Marías. Most travellers see it in a few hours on the way to Malinalco or Ixtapan de la Sal, and one night is enough unless you are here for a weaving course or paragliding.

Getting around
The Centro is walkable: plaza, both churches, market and most places to eat sit within about 10 minutes on foot. Taxis cover the Cristo Rey trailhead, Desierto del Carmen and the highway hotels; agree the fare before you get in. There is no useful local bus network for visitors.

Watch out
Safety
- The Cristo Rey path climbs more than 1,000 (≈ US$55) steps; there is also a paved road, but it is steep and unshaded.
- Afternoon rain from roughly May to September; start hikes and the hill early.
- Market days (Thursday and Sunday) close several downtown blocks to traffic.
- Some bars and small shops post no prices: ask the total before you order.
- Desierto del Carmen is an active religious community: keep quiet and check visiting hours before you go.
