Falls Creek is Victoria's largest ski resort by terrain and the state's only fully ski-in, ski-out village, 4.5 h from Melbourne up the Bogong High Plains Road. Winter is the reason to come: 450 ha of runs, most of the beginner and intermediate ground covered by snowmaking. Outside the snow season it is a quiet high-plains base for walking and mountain biking, with few services open.

Getting around

In winter the village is car-free apart from Bogong High Plains Road: park at the overnight car park, then move luggage and people by the Accommodation Transfer Service or the free village shuttle. A taxi runs between lodges and restaurants. Everything else is on skis or on foot, and the village speed limit is 30 km/h.

Watch out

Safety

The resort itself is low-crime and busy with families; the real risks are the drive up (ice, rockfall, snow chains), deep snow off the groomed runs, and altitude and cold exposure on the high plains. Tell someone your route if you go cross-country or off the back of the resort.
  • Snow chains must be carried on Bogong High Plains Road through the nominated ski season (June–October); 2WD vehicles are told to fit them after fresh snow.
  • There is no fuel at Falls Creek or between Mount Beauty and Omeo, about 115 km: fill up in Mount Beauty.
  • Resort entry and parking passes sell out on weekends and after heavy snow; buy at least a day ahead and print the pass for the dashboard.
  • Self-drive in the village is not allowed in winter except on Bogong High Plains Road.
  • Lift tickets, lessons and resort entry are all separate costs; add them before you compare a Falls Creek week with a Victorian or overseas alternative.
