Little Rock

Two nights covers downtown, the Clinton library and Central High; add a third only for a River Trail bike day or a Hot Springs run.

Little Rock is Arkansas's capital and largest city, set where the Ozarks, the Ouachitas and the flat Delta meet. The sights cluster in a compact downtown and a short westward strip along I-630, so two nights is enough for the core. Spring and fall are the good windows; summer is hot and humid, and the city is car-first outside the River Market.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable and the free Metro Streetcar loops the River Market, the Clinton library and Argenta in North Little Rock. For anything outside that loop, drive: Rock Region Metro buses run city-wide but slowly. The Arkansas River Trail is a paved loop for bikes and on foot.

Watch out

Safety

Downtown is busy and generally fine by day and evening; use normal city sense after dark, keep to lit blocks, and drive rather than walk if you are far west of I-630.
  • Summer heat and humidity peak in Jul–Aug; plan indoor stops midday.
  • Tornado season runs roughly Mar–May; check the forecast and know your shelter.
  • Central High is a working school: tours are by reservation only, and you may not walk in on your own.
  • Streetcar tracks downtown are a hazard for bikes; cross them at a right angle.
