Castlecomer is the largest town in north County Kilkenny, population about 1,500, built on three centuries of coal mining that ended in 1969. The colliery site is now the Discovery Park, the town's main draw, with 80 acres of forest and 6 km of trails. The town itself is a single broad main street, the Square, on the N78, and most visitors see it as a stop between Kilkenny and Carlow rather than a base.
