Denizli is a working textile and agricultural city of about a million people, and almost everyone passes through it on the way to Pamukkale. It has real sights of its own — Laodicea, a small ethnography museum, the Seljuk Akhan caravanserai — but they are spread out and the city is not the reason people come. Use it for one night, a bus connection or a cheap bed, and put your sightseeing nights at Pamukkale or Karahayıt.

Getting around

Most central sights are walkable. Town buses run from the otogar, with route maps and timetables on the Denizli municipality transport site; buses 120, 250, 300 and 320 serve the university and hospital. For Laodicea, take any Pamukkale-bound bus or dolmuş and walk about 1.5 km west from the approach road. The Pamukkale bus leaves the otogar from Platform 76 roughly every 20 min.

One of Turkey's best-preserved Roman cities with a fraction of Ephesus's crowds, but you need your own wheels or a tour.

Kaklık Cave

Small karst cave with its own travertine pools, open daily 10:00–19:00, adult 15 TL. Only worth it if you are driving past.

Akhan Caravanserai

Watch out

Safety

Denizli is a low-crime city and the main risks are practical: summer heat, unlit walk back from Laodicea, and taxi fares from Çardak Airport with no meter competition. Agree the fare or use a transfer before you get in.
  • Places mapped as "Pamukkale" can be inside Denizli city, far from the travertine pools: check the address, not the district name.
  • Çardak Airport is 65 km out and no longer has a town bus: pre-book a transfer or accept the taxi fare.
  • The Göller Ekspresi from İzmir reaches Denizli around 04:10 and the return passes at about 02:00 — the bus is faster and runs at civilised hours.
  • Summer highs average 35°C; do Laodicea and the parks early or late.
  • Some hotel and restaurant listings in older guides are dead links: confirm the property is open before you book.
