  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Hartford is Connecticut's capital and one of the oldest cities in the US, founded in 1635. Its draw is a tight cluster of literary and museum sights — the Mark Twain House, the Harriet Beecher Stowe House and the Wadsworth Atheneum, the country's oldest public art museum. Downtown is walkable and quiet; most visitors come for a day, or use it as a stop on the Amtrak line between New Haven and Springfield. Two nights is plenty.

The Twain and Stowe houses are 2 mi (3 km) west — a 35–40 min walk or a short rideshare. CT Transit buses cover Greater Hartford; the free Dash Shuttle loops downtown on weekdays (check hours). A car helps for Elizabeth Park and day trips.

Watch out

Safety

Hartford's downtown and museum districts are fine by day. The main cautions are empty streets after dark and a few blocks south and east of downtown — use a rideshare at night rather than walking.
  • Downtown is very quiet after about 6pm; plan dinner before it thins out.
  • Some blocks south and east of downtown have little foot traffic at night — take a rideshare rather than walk.
  • Museum hours are limited: the Wadsworth opens Thursday–Sunday only (check).
  • Winter ice and snow make pavements slick; summer afternoons can hit 32°C+ with humidity.
