AliceAlice, Texas

Stop for half a day, not a night: the Tejano and South Texas museums are 2 blocks apart, and the water tower is a 5-minute detour off TX-44.

Alice is a 19,000-person oil town on the South Texas Plains, roughly halfway between San Antonio and the Rio Grande Valley on US-281. It calls itself the Hub City and the birthplace of Tejano music: the first Tejano records were cut here in the 1940s, and the Tejano Music Hall of Fame Museum keeps that story. Two small museums, a lake park and a record-setting water tower are the whole sightseeing list. Most travellers pass through on the way to Corpus Christi, Laredo or McAllen; a half-day stop is enough, and a night only makes sense if you are breaking up a long drive.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Arrive & move

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights sit 1–3 km apart and there is no useful local transit for visitors. Downtown is walkable once you park — the South Texas Museum and the Tejano Music Hall of Fame Museum are about 2 blocks apart on Wright Street. Greyhound serves Alice, but the stop is a highway depot, not a base for sightseeing.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 30 min

TX-44 west about 25 km (16 mi), then local roads

Small Duval County seat with a historic courthouse square; pairs well with the Alice museums in one afternoon.

Door to door: About 1 h

TX-44 east to US-77, about 70 km (43 mi)

Gulf beaches, the USS Lexington and the Texas State Aquarium; the obvious next base east.

Laredo

overnight

Door to door: About 2 h 15 min

US-281 south via Falfurrias and Hebbronville, about 190 km (118 mi)

Border city with its own sights; too far to return comfortably in a day.

Pleasanton, Texas

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 45 min

US-281 north about 150 km (93 mi)

Useful as a break on the San Antonio run, not a destination on its own.

Eagle Pass

overnight

Door to door: About 3 h 30 min

US-281 north then US-57 west, about 300 km (186 mi)

Rio Grande crossing; plan a night, not a loop.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

US-281 business strip (south)

Chain motels and truck-stop services on the highway; easiest for one night with a car.

East Main Street (TX-44)

Second cluster of chain hotels near the highway junction; closest to the water tower and downtown.

Downtown / Wright Street

Museums and the old commercial core; very few beds, so treat it as a daytime stop.

Watch out

Safety

Alice is a small Texas town and the usual street-smart rules apply: it is safer by day around the museums and highway strip, and you should not walk the older residential blocks after dark. Heat, long empty drives and summer storms are the real risks.
  • Summer heat is the main hazard: 35 °C (95 °F)+ afternoons from June to September, with little shade downtown.
  • Distances between towns are long and cell coverage thins on the back roads; fill the tank in Alice before heading south or west.
  • Check museum opening days before you drive in — small-town Texas museums often run limited hours or by appointment.
  • Border-bound highways (US-281 south, TX-359) have checkpoints; carry ID even for domestic travel.

  2. Two walking clusters with rescue anchors: Wright Street museums and the TX-44 water tower and Main Street strip.
  3. Place pages with verified hours for the South Texas Museum and the Tejano Music Hall of Fame Museum, plus eat pages with last orders.
  4. Heat and storm fixtures so summer and winter gates can go green.
