PleasantonPleasanton, Texas

Give Pleasanton one night as a San Antonio base or a US-281 fuel-and-food stop; its own sights fill half a day, not a trip.

Pleasanton is a small South Texas town of about 9,000 people on I-37 and US-281, roughly 45 minutes south of San Antonio. It has one museum, one river park, a country club and a handful of Tex-Mex and Chinese kitchens. Travellers use it as a cheaper bed near San Antonio, a break on the drive to Corpus Christi or the Rio Grande Valley, or a look at the old San Antonio, Uvalde and Gulf Railroad depot kept at the Longhorn Museum.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the default: Second Street runs north–south through the centre, Goodwin Street east–west, and I-37/US-281 link the town to San Antonio and Corpus Christi. There is no useful local bus for visitors; rideshare coverage is thin, so plan taxis or drive.

Mostly a fuel and food stop on the way to the Valley.

Border city with its own food and history; too far for a comfortable return day.

Rio Grande crossing; sleep over rather than rush back.

Watch out

Safety

Low street crime for a town this size; the real risks are summer heat, long rural drives and unlit roads at night. Keep valuables out of sight in parked cars.
  • Summer heat: 35 °C (95 °F)+ from June to September, with high humidity — carry water.
  • Distances are long: San Antonio is about 45 min, Corpus Christi about 2 h, Laredo about 2 h 30 min.
  • Small-town hours: many kitchens close by 21:00 and some shut on Sundays — check before you drive out.
  • Rural roads at night have deer and few lights.
