Harper

Harper is a 2–3 night detour for travellers who want a remote colonial town and empty beaches; only go in the dry season (Dec–Mar) and arrange a 4x4 or flight from Monrovia.

Harper, at Liberia's southeastern tip, was the capital of Maryland and retains a faded grandeur in its crumbling beach houses and the William Tubman Mansion. The main draw is the quiet Cape Palmas beach and a sense of isolation. You need 2–3 nights, but only if you have a driver or are flying in — the road from Monrovia is long and rough.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • West Africa ↗Carry an original yellow fever vaccination certificate on any West African trip: several countries on the coast road demand it of every arrival, and the rest demand it after you have passed through a neighbour.
  • West Africa ↗Cross land borders and drive between cities in daylight only; plan each crossing as a full travel day with cash for fees and passport copies for checkpoints.
  • Liberia ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport on official Liberian government sources; many nationalities need a visa before travel.

Watch out

Safety

Harper is quiet, but crime (theft) can occur. Secure valuables, avoid walking alone after dark, and rely on your guesthouse for local advice. The main risk is health: malaria is endemic.
  • Dry season only: roads from Monrovia are unpaved and impassable after heavy rain.
  • No ATMs that reliably accept foreign cards: bring enough US dollars cash for your stay.
  • Electricity and water are unreliable; expect solar or generator power at guesthouses.
  • Mosquitoes are prevalent: bring repellent and a net.
